Trenches for the Quar, Part VIII, End of the sandbags (at last!)

last we saw this was the extent of the sandbagging effort

A spate of hot weather forced me to stay inside and work on this project instead of mowing the lawn (well, that's my story and I'm sticking to it). After an arduous two days where I spent almost twenty hours (on top of the fifteen or so I spent on the Great Redoubt board) sticking the horrible little things down I am finished with the sandbagging operation. Some touch-up remains to do on the boards and then there's the barbed-wire, duckboards and shattered woods to conjure up, but I am now closing in on the terminus of this commission.

the clay is perfect for forming the sandbags
but will STICK TO ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ON IT'S OWN, anyone foolish enough to emulate my madness is well-advised to lay down a thick line of water-soluble wood glue (I use Titebond)

I'm not above cheating a little, there is no point in making/laying down sandbags
nobody will ever see when a strip of rolled-up clay will do the job
after the sandbags were emplaced I painted a 50/50 Titebond/water mixture over the  entire assembly,
flood the mixture on to ensure that the sandbags stick together or the first hard knock with send them scattering across the room

the state of play as it stands now

the main redoubt, this was inspired by this short movie with some minor modifications

the big hill with a weapons pit

some normal trench line with a weapons pit

and, last but not least a stretch of normal trench line

  1. Dude that is bloody amazing! It is looking so good. I will be able to use this, not only for Quar, but a slew of other periods. Loving this!

    Cheers

    1. I hate painting, he hates building terrain, we have a symbiotic relationship. Once you start on the sandbags it becomes a Zen thing, time passes, the model grows, my blood pressure drops......
