Flintcon 2023, photo report

Several of my friends braved the single-digit (Fahrenheit, no less) and I took the journey up to Flint Michigan for Flintcon 2023 and what a show it was! As usual the Flea Market was expansive and varied, I stood firm by my commitment and bought no minis (for the first time in a decade!) leaving with just two books. there was a great selection of games and the presentation was very attractive.

As is often the case I missed snapping photos of the second half of the Con because I was running a game myself, so you have to figure that the convention was twice as cool as you will see below! A big round of applause for Rod Cain, the one-man dynamo that is the driving force behind this neat little convention, Huzzah!

28MM SHARP PRACTICE  by Mike Ovsenik, this game featured some lovely terrain and best of all had a steamboat! (a stern-wheeler no less)

28MM CHAIN OF COMMAND by Marc Renouf

nicely realistic terrain

like the view from 1000 ft

troops advancing through the vineyard

an infantryman's fun is always ruined when a tank shows up!

6MM NAPOLEONIC, THE BATTLE OF MARENGO
by Jeff Drummond

a whole different scale, now it is like the view from 10,000ft!

if only Napoleon was 5600ft tall instead of 5'6"

54MM NAPOLEONIC SPANISH SKIRMISH, Donnybrook rules presented by Todd Kershner

a lavish set-up with lots of big figures!
it was like being on a tall ladder, quite a change from 6mm

finally, a scale my aging eyes can handle!

and they were very nicely painted as well

28MM BLACK POWDER NAPOLEONICS by Jon Carroll, sponsored by Rider's hobbies

beautifully painted minis were a stand-out feature of this game

BATTLE-TECH, ALPHA STRIKE, by Desmond Woolston

oh no! giant fighting robots wrecking the countryside!

I don't think that they did the city any good either,
it's great to see this venerable system still in action

FREEBLADES, by Geoffrey Wing

32mm(ish) fantasy teams battled it out using this detailed system
that requires thoughtful use of each character's strengths and skills

the rather nice terrain drew the eye

28MM BATTLE OF THE HYDASPES RIVER, by Brian Peruski

this big and beautiful game pitted Porus of India and Alexander of Macedonia
in a toe-to-toe slugfest using the fast-playing Triumph rules set

of course, the minis were very well painted

Again, my apologies t the many gamemasters that presented games that I didn't get pictures of (including everyone in the second period). Good work all of you! The con was busy and looks like it had half again as many people in attendance as last year, something I consider a very good sign.

Kudos again to Rod Cain and his crew. The work that they put in really shows, this is a great little convention!

  1. I had a great time at the con. During the first session I was in an British vs Italian sea battle using Great quarter rules.
