I had a chance to sit down and paint the pilots and attach the windscreens. I then touched up some silvering on a few of the decals. All that remains is to do the weathering (which will be a while as I have grown tired of this project and have a dozen other projects on hold). As such I have released the planes to their respective air forces and sent them on their way.
these two went to China to assist with the struggle against Imperial Japan
the thirty-year-old decal on one of them failed so I was forced to hand paint the tail stripes
the Chinese often had uninspired camouflage schemes
even to the point of using only one color for the entire aircraft
but they are ready to give their all
this pair are scheduled to defend Mother Russia
the Russians weren't great at interesting camo schemes either
at least the undersides are sky-blue
more warrior for the homeland, I do love the overstated spats
I'm still trying to decide if I should add bombs/rockets to some of these
they were used as ground attack aircraft in the Great Patriotic War
but during the Khalkin Gol Incident they were front line fighters
perhaps I will only equip a couple of them
one lucky bird got sent to sunny Spain.....
............to help the Republican government resist the forces of Fascism
I need to round up some more information regarding squadron markings
before this one will be properly finished
This group build saved a lot of time (particularly in the painting process) despite the struggles with the cabane struts. I have eight more Soviet biplanes to build and none of them promise to be any easier than these were so I will be taking a break from the aircraft for a while and turning my attentions to some of the thousands of unpainted minis lurking in The Vault.
