28mm Late Roman Cataphracts by Gripping Beast

As if I needed more figures to paint! Finishing out their Late Roman collectrion GB has brought out some lovely Late Roman Cataphracts (although, with tiny changes, these would easily serve in a LOT of other armies!). Let's take a look ....

the front of the box, nice artwork

The figures are cast in a soft (not flexible, just soft) gray plastic that takes detail very well with nearly no mold lines. There are three different poses for the horses and three for the riders. Both are clad in complete suits of lamellar or scale armor which is very well rendered. The horses are posed well and both horses and rides have good proportions. At $33.00US for twelve figures these are an inexpensive way to add some real heft to your Late Roman army (they will be going into my Post-Roman army as the mythical Arthurian Knights option).

the back of the box

the box with contents four identical sprues of minis and a set of six bases

sprue side A

sprue side B

the faces are so well done that they were triggering the facial recognition software in my camers

very well rendered armor

my only complaint is the posing of the figure using the lance,
this will create problems in basing and storage

the horses are excellent, this has become a trademark of GB plastics

All-in-all an excellent set of minis as well as a good price. Highly Recommended!

  1. Did mine... wait yours, in Metal, but these look great! First thing I’d do is replace the lances with metal ones only because they are so bloody long. That just begs to be broken in a game otherwise.

    Cheers

  2. Those do look good, and the armored horses have a lot of uses beyond historical.

Maybe magnetize the lance arms for protection?

    1. I was already poking around in the spares box so that I could alter them to carry the lance upright.

  3. These look very nice. I'm just beginning an Arthurian/Dark Ages project so these might well go on the list.
