Assembling the forces for Battlefields

        Last Saturday I ran my scenario for Battlefields with my usual gaming group. The conversion from hex-based movement to octagonal movement went without a hitch. Some valid points were made regarding the rules and adjustments have been  made.

       The game scenario is this; the Japanese have begun an assault upon the Russian positions. Things were going well until the sun came up and the Russian artillery observers were able to effectively adjust the fire of their heavy guns. This fire has been making mincemeat of the Japanese infantry. To remedy this situation the Japanese have launched an air assault on the Soviet gun line with all available forces. The Soviets have a standing patrol (there being no radar available at this time) which will be outnumbered initially but will gain in strength as other aircraft respond after the attack has been identified.

       The Russians are outnumbered but they have a singular mission of taking out the bombers. The Japanese escort fighters have the role of shepherding the bombers over the target as well as the unspoken (but obvious to everyone) desire to outscore their compatriots. The bombers (which will be run by me-nobody wants to run bombers) will try to survive long enough to deliver their payloads and then skedaddle on home.

    1. Yes. Slow, poorly armed and painfully flammable is rarely the first choice for most gamers. Plus the "fly straight toward the target" imperative leaves a very limited array of tactical decisions.
