28mm Dieselpunk Command

 the front of the box

I need this like I need a hole in my head, another dead-sexy genre to distract me from my already overburdened painting list! I have long been fascinated by he Dieselpunk world, it just seemed so much more probable than Steampunk and then there were all those cool old serials from the 1930/40s movies. Crimson Skies tempted me badly but died before I bought into it. Now I have time and money (my kids are all out of college) and resisting this latest issue might well be a futile effort.

Golden Dragon Games has teamed up with Wargames Atlantic to produce this range of figures set in a world where the Communist Internationale has taken over large tracts of land and battle with the old empires and republics. A sort of "Great War meets 40K"  vibe is the best way to describe the artistic style although there are a lot of overtones of WW2 when it comes to vehicles. This kit is the Command section for a USA infantry unit. On the technical side (of the product, not the subject) the models are cast in the usual medium gray plastic with no flash and only smallest hint of mold-lines.  The models come across five sprues and will assemble into a dozen figures. Bases are provided.

the back of the box, some nice shots of painted mins

and the contents...
a sprue of bases, two of command and two of "regular Joes "
the bases are detailed but in a low-key way

command sprue, side A
tons, I mean tons, of options

Command Sprue, side B
I honestly don't get the torso split in two while the legs are cast as one piece
but who am I to make these decisions

a bevy of firearms, everything from AR platforms to pump shotguns with heat shields
all crisply detailed and with an arm attached  to ease assembly

personally I'm not a fan of cast-on flags
but these are nicely animated and the detail is raised to simply painting

the unit flag (I guess) and a 40K looking gun, very cool
details are sharp and the proportions of the minis look good

of course there is no shortage of spare heads

regular Joe sprue, side A
these are some fully kitted-out lads!

regular Joe sprue, side B
the alternate legs means that you can have some guys in greatcoats and others in shorted jackets,
a nice touch that adds variety to the unit

and, of course, more heads, along with weapons that range from a bayonet through to a flamethrower by way of Tommy guns and what looks like a bolt action las-gun

while having cast-on details like canteens and bayonets would simplify the models I like the separate items, U.S. soldiers are very prone to individualizing their equipment

the broken sword is a neat  bit, "I'm not giving up yet!" it screams

This set goes with the Infantry and Hard Suit sets to form the basis for a complete USA line-up. These are very well detailed and will paint up nicely due to the precise sculpting and casting. If you are looking for something a little different these are right up your alley. Golden Dragon has other OPFOR minis available and are releasing more on a regular basis. I look forward to seeing the whole range.

Very Tempting, erm I mean, Highly Recommennded!
